Favourite food: bamboo
The name of the red panda is derived from the Nepalese: Nigalya ponya. This means bamboo eater and is a perfect description of the cat bear,s main activity. Red pandas live hidden in thick bamboo forests in the Himalayan mountains and in the Chinese province of Szechwan feeding on bamboo leaves all day.

Why are red pandas so slow?
These robust cat bears are not exactly brimming with energy. They spend most of the day resting in the sunshine. Red pandas are not lazy, however. They are just forced to save energy because bamboo isn`t very nutritious.

Cats or bears?
The red panda,s thick, longhaired coat is perfectly suited to life in the cold mountains. Because of their long hair their faces seem to be broader than they really are. Their length to shoulder height is only 35 centimetres. Because of their short legs and long tails, the red pandas look rather like cats, which is why they are also called cat bears.

Mysterious pregnancy
Red pandas have a variable gestation period. Their pregnancy can last from 114 to 145 days. This extraordinary feature is considered to be a consequence of their poor means of nutrition. In order to develop enough milk for their young, the mother must eat three times as much bamboo as normal. If the conditions are not right, the unborn pandas just stop their development for a while.

unbelievable but true:
Because red pandas like bamboo so much for food, they have a false thumb on the inside of their paws, a sort of elongated bone. This makes grasping bamboo leaves and twigs easier.
